Tournament planning

Keep a tennis club ladder active and clear.

A ladder gives members a reason to keep competing between club events. Clear expectations matter as much as the leaderboard.

Choose an Elo ladder or a position-based challenge ladder

A traditional challenge ladder may move players between numbered positions after a win. Courtira Community Open Ladder uses Elo ratings instead: accepted results change ratings, and the leaderboard reflects those ratings. Explain that distinction before launch so members do not expect to swap places directly after a challenge.

Publish practical challenge expectations

Decide how players should arrange matches, which courts they can book, how long they have to respond and how absences should be handled. Make sure members know these are club expectations; do not present an agreement to play as an automatically reserved court. Start with enough active players to give members realistic opponent choices.

Agree on scoring and result entry

Pick a tennis match format that members can fit around their bookings. Courtira supports several set and match options; review the actual ladder setup. Members can submit their own Open Ladder results with their identity fixed as the first player. The opponent is asked to confirm the score. Share who to contact when an incorrect score is submitted.

Explain confirmation and disputes before the first match

In Courtira, pending member results are accepted after 24 hours unless disputed, or earlier when confirmed. Elo changes when a result is accepted. Both players remain blocked from entering another ladder result until the pending score is resolved. Disputed scores go to Community admins, so appoint someone who can review them consistently.

Read ratings in context

An Elo rating is a record of competitive results in the ladder, not a promise of a player’s ability in every setting. Courtira also shows Rating Confidence to indicate how much match data supports a rating. Encourage members to play and report results consistently rather than treating a new player’s early rating as a definitive assessment.

Build a repeatable club routine

Introduce new members, explain where to review scores and send occasional Community announcements with practical reminders. Celebrate completed matches as well as the leading players. Keep personal contact details out of public posts, and ask members for consent before using their names or results in promotional stories.

Put the plan into practice

Before registration, check Courtira’s player and division limits. The free planning calculator can model fields larger than a particular app plan supports.
